(FREE) The National Gallery

and other museums

(CHEAP) The Scott Monument. Tribute to the leading Scottish author, who all but single handedly created the Scotland brand for tourists in the middle of the nineteenth century. At £38 for two adults and two children, it involves a steep climb topped by great views of the city.

(Free) St Andrews Square. One of the squares in the opulent New Town. This one has the advantage of offering great views of the Old Town (which used to have the tallest building in Europe).

The New Town: Go down the hill (and so north) towards the Forth from George Street. Perhaps combine your experience of the New Town with a drink at the beautiful Café Royal or a meal at one of the upmarket restaurants on Broughton Street. You might try a walk in but it is also a good idea to reserve beforehand, particularly at the weekend.

Other Things to Do (FREE)

(FREE)Arthur’s Seat. The tripadvisor reviews give a pretty good idea of what is involved. You go for the brisk walk and the views really. Climbing to the top takes about an hour to two hours.

(FREE) Calton Hill. An easier ascent than Arthur’s Seat with great views of Edinburgh. You go for the views really. Also possible to take a taxi up.

(FREE) The Botanic Gardens. A great place for a relaxing walk and to enjoy the different flora. It’s beautiful, free, which is surprising, and a good place for children to run around. There is also a pleasant café in the middle. Recommended. It is easily accessible from the house with the n° 9 bus.

Leith old docks

Walk down Leith Walk (which is a bit run down) or take the tram to the Old Port (which is a bit reminiscent of the Old Port in Copenhagen suggesting the strong ties to the Baltic in the past). Leith used to be a bit neglected and it was here that the film Trainspotting was mostly set. However, it is gentrifying quite quickly and the old Port represents a chance for a walk and perhaps even a visit to a restaurant
