Edinburgh Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival, held every August for three weeks in Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh. When planning, bear in mind that it is possible to filter free activities and activities particularly for children.
Accommodation fills up fast and prices rise a great deal during the festival (by comparison with the rest of the year although only slighly higher than July), so early reservations are advisable.
Edinburgh’s weather in August can be variable; bring warm clothing and rain gear to stay comfortable outdoors. Edinburgh’s compact city centre is easily walkable. Public transportation such as buses and trams are available, but driving is discouraged during the festival due to heavy traffic.
The Fringe showcases thousands of performances across many genres including theatre, comedy, dance, music, cabaret, circus, and more, with over 3,000 shows featured in 2025 alone. The festival has a unique, open-access ethos where anyone can participate, leading to a diverse and often experimental programme
