Parking Information

Common Questions

Is parking available on-site at Sheens House?

Yes, we provide on-site parking for guests. We do this by offering “resident visitor parking permits” free of charge. As these tickets have a cost of us, we only offer tickets for one car (or motorbike). This will enable you to park free of charge in parking bays with small dotted white lines for the duration of your actual stay with us.

For motorbikes, we strongly advise you to go to secure parking. Not only is there a real risk of the bike being stolen, there is also a risk of its being vandalised. If you are reading this before arrival, perhaps think about changing your booking to a hotel that provides secure parking. If notthe nearest secure parking to the house is at Q-Park Quarermile.

Are there nearby parking alternatives?

There are public parking facilities that are free of charge within a relatively short walking distance from Sheens House (10 to 15 minutes walk). The free parking zone is also accessible by bus. For more information see the “free parking zone” section below.

Is there a fee for parking at Sheens House?

On-site parking is complimentary, but charges apply at nearby public parking locations unless you go to the “free parking zone”. Parking anywhere in the centre of Edinburgh is expensive! You cannot park during the day on a single yellow line and parking bays with dotted white lines are paying.

Do I need to reserve a parking spot in advance?

Yes, please inform us ahead of your visit. From the information that we have on our side, we do not know in advance if you are coming with a car or not. If you tell us beforehand, we can make sure we have the necessary tickets and place them in your room ready for you on arrival.

Parking Information

If you wish to take your car into the centre, you will have to pay. The Ringo app is useful for this:

https://myringgo.co.uk/apps

We do not have off-road parking but, on request, we provide you with parking tickets that will enable one car to park free of charge you during the period when there are restrictions (weekdays from 8.30 in the morning to 5.30 in the afternoon). You are entitled to park free of charge, using one of the parking tickets we can provide you with, in Zones 7 and Zones S1 (in immediate vicinity to the house).

FREE PARKING

All these arrangements sound quite complicated, especially if you are coming from abroad. It is easier than it sounds.

Basically, you have to park in a parking bay with small dotted white lines (in Zones 7 or S1) and display the number of parking tickets that are appropriate for the duration of a given consecutive stay. We will give you the appropriate number of tickets. Each ticket lasts 1.5 hours. When displaying the tickets, you put the same start time on each ticket. (see 4 below)

Although you are entitled to park in Permit Holders Only bays, these are to enable residents to park close to their own house. As a result, could we request that you attempt to find an ordinary parking bay (the small dotted white lines) rather than take up a resident’s place? This is especially the case for the permit holders parking bays in front of the house. Our neighbours have not complained yet for any reason. Long may this last!

The sections below are:

  1. Where you can park on the road. You can park in a bay with dotted white lines. (You can only park on a single yellow line between 5.30 in the afternoon and 8.30 in the morning on weekdays). You cannot park during weekdays on a single yellow line, even if you have parking ticket).
  2. Which zone you can park in. You want Zone 7 or S1. There is a map below that indicates the zone that you can park in near the house. This map is also in the folder in your room. Looking at the house, you go to the right. If not, there almost always places on the street on the other side of the modern building opposite the house.
  3. When the parking restrictions are. You can park free of charge from 5.30 in the afternoon to 8.30 in the morning, including on a single yellow line. You can also park free of charge over the weekend from 5.30 on Friday to 8.30 on Monday, including on a single yellow line. During the week, from 8.30 in the morning to 5.30 in the afternoon, you will either have to pay or use our parking tickets.
  4. How to use the parking tickets. Each ticket is for 1.5 hours. We will provide you with enough tickets to cover the duration of your actual stay with us. You have to scratch out the same start time on each ticket for a consecutive stay (see 4 below). Please inform us of when you will be arriving and when you will be leaving so that we can provide you with the right amount of tickets and place them in your room ready for use.
  5. There is a free parking zone about 10 to 15 minutes walk from the house. If you would just like to park up your car for the duration of your stay, we can take you out and bring you back from there.
1. WHERE YOU CAN PARK ON THE STREET

In parking spaces (bays) with a dotted white line (but not where marked permit holders only)

There are multiple parking bays near the house, (which is in a residential area just off the Meadows), and it is easy to find a place at less than a minute to 2 minutes walk from the house.

On a single yellow line (when there are NO parking restrictions).

There is a single yellow line directly opposite the house further facilitating parking in the evening and at weekends. You are allowed to park the car on a single yellow line after 5.30 in the afternoon and before 8.30 in the morning on weekdays and then all weekend from Friday at 5.30 to Monday at 8.30. You are also allowed to park for 20 minutes during the day to offload the car.

2. STAYING THE RIGHT ZONE: Zones 7 and S1

These signs give you the zone (in the small blue square). As you will have a permit, you do not have to pay at the machine and you do not have to respect the 6 hours limit.

This is the area that you are allowed to park in with a ticket. You WILL find a place, almost always without any difficulty.

Be careful, though, for Argyle Place (going down the hill from the pub) you can only park on the Argyle Backpackers side of the road. The other side of the road is in Zone 8! If you cannot find a place in easy sight of Sheens House, there is almost always somewhere available on Chalmers Crescent or Hatton Place (both sides of the road)

If you opt for the S1 zone, Hatton Place is just on the other side of the modern building opposite 3 Sciennes Road. Chalmers Crescent is the road running up the hill from the junction.

FREE PARKING TICKETS for ONE and TWO nights

As parking tickets have a cost for us and we are limited in the amount that we can order in a year, we will cover you for parking only for the duration of your actual stay (from time or arrival to check out time on your last day).

Each parking ticket is for 1.5 hours

For a one night stay,

    we can cover you from

check in time (15.00) or actual arrival time

and from 8.30 next day to 11.30 or actual departure time
For a two night stay,

we can cover you with up to 10 tickets

You will be covered from check in at 15.00 (2 tickets)

or actual arrival time to 18.00

    And then

for 9 hours from 8.30 to 17.30 the next day (6 tickets)

and from 8.30 next day to 11.30 (2 tickets)

        Or actual departure time

Each additional day is an extra 6 tickets.

Great if you could return any tickets that you do not use (as these tickets have a cost for us and we are limited in the amount we can order per year).

4. USING PARKING TICKETS

As long as you inform us beforehand that you require parking, the tickets will be in your room, open at the page with the instructions of how to use them and where you can use them. These are the same instructions as those on this webpage.

One night stay: 6 hours (4 tickets = 4 x 1.5 hours)

Two night stay 15 hours (2+6+2 tickets = 10 tickets)

2 tickets for the first afternoon, 6 tickets for the following day, 2 tickets for the morning of your departure.

HOW TO SCRATCH OUT THE TICKETS DURING PAID PARKING PERIODS

You have to put the SAME STARTING TIME on all tickets for a consecutive period of parking

For 1.5 hours beginning at, say, 8.30, scratch out the year, the month and the date as well as the starting time on the ticket. In this case, the starting time on this ticket would be 8.30.

For 3 hours beginning at, say, 8.30, scratch out the year, the month and the date as well as the SAME starting time on EACH ticket. In this case, the starting time on the first ticket would be 8.30 and the starting time on the second ticket would ALSO be 8.30.

For 4.5 hours of parking, the starting time will also be the SAME on all three tickets, so: 8.30 on the first, the second and the third ticket. You then apply the same principle for any consecutive period that you choose to park for.

5. FREE PARKING ZONE

As the centre can be easily accessed using the N° 9 bus (see section on travel for travel passes) or by walking, you might also want to think about parking up for the whole of your stay in Edinburgh in the free parking zone.

At least as far as I am concerned (and I would say most other residents), it is just not worth taking the car into the centre during the day on account of the cost of parking and the difficulty (lots of one way streets and long diversions). In the evening it is much better: for the centre, parking restrictions finish at 6.30 from Monday to Saturday inclusive. On Sunday, there are no parking restrictions.

The free parking zone is at a short distance from the house (10 to 15 minutes walk) but it can also be accessed directly by the N° 9 bus. It is possible to go into the centre on the N°9 or come back to the house with the same bus. The stop is one minute from us. If you wish, we can also take you out there (you follow in your car) and bring you back in our car.

When parking in the free parking zone, look for places that have NO markings beside the pavement. You are not allowed to park during weekdays on a single yellow line and you have to pay where there are dotted white lines.
