Edinburgh Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival, held every August for three weeks in Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh.

Accommodation fills up fast and prices rise a great deal during the festival (by comparison with the rest of the year although only slighly higher than July), so early reservations are advisable.
Edinburgh’s weather in August can be variable; bring warm clothing and rain gear to stay comfortable outdoors. Edinburgh’s compact city centre is easily walkable. Public transportation such as buses and trams are available, but driving is discouraged during the festival due to heavy traffic.
The Fringe showcases thousands of performances across many genres including theatre, comedy, dance, music, cabaret, circus, and more, with over 3,000 shows featured in 2025 alone. The festival has a unique, open-access ethos where anyone can participate, leading to a diverse and often experimental programme.
Ten tips for Fringe first-timers…
Buying Tickets and Soaking in the Atmosphere
We are very well placed for the centre of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, whose principal “centre” is George Square:

You will be able to buy tickets for all the events across Edinburgh (including cut price tickets) and you are already well placed for all the events in George Square (which has a beer garden where you can soak up the atmosphere in addition to multiple shows). The University campus centre is also at a 5 minutes walk for other shows and entertainment.
- Fringe Box Office:
The main Fringe Box Office is located on Old Assembly Close, but you can also purchase tickets at individual venues.

For last-minute plans, the Half-Price Hut offers discounted tickets for shows later that day or the next morning, and many street performances are free.
