The National Museum

(and don’t miss Greyfriars Churchyard for a real trip back in time. It is beside the Greyfriars Bobby pub)

The National Museum is five to 10 minutes from the house – Google always overestimates a bit – and, in addition having a wonderful Victorian building at its heart, there is a lot to see and do. Children will enjoy the science sections and … it is all free.

Blackford Hill and Royal Observatory

Blackford Hill is an altogether manageable walk from the house. Google says about 30 mins …

Camera Obscura

Although it is not cheap, this is the best visit, I would say, for kids (on a rainy day or not).

Play Areas

a) The Meadows: The Meadows is a huge, flat green space perfect for picnics, flying kites, or just kicking a football around.

b) Bruntsfield Links: (beside the Meadows) has a pitch and putt course. It is possible rent golf clubs and balls from the Golf Tavern. It’s a great, low-pressure way to introduce kids to the game.

c) For the East Meadows Play Park aim for the Meadows City Tennis Club, Melville Drive and you will see it.

d) Timetwisters play area: It is a bit out of the way but it gets good reviews and, once again, something to do on a rainy day?
