Eating and Drinking
The information here is for the area around Marchmont and Sciennes.
We supply menus only to give you an idea. We cannot update as all the different places change their menu ….
Note: the Tripadvisor scores are given for each outlet. Tripadvisor is, perhaps, not always all that a reliable source of information. The scores here are just “indicative”. As a rule of thumb for Tripadvisor, 3.5 and above is “ok to good” and anything over 4 is “better than good” and above 4.6, hopefully, really good!
(Google maps scores tend to be quite a bit above Tripadisor scores and the Google score is given when there is not Tripadivsor score).
For the centre, apart from the cheap and chearful Wetherspoons chain (which is good for families), I have just put in a few possibilities
All indications of time to get to the outlet are for walking except for bars a bit out of the way where the driving time is given.
The different sections are:
a) Getting Breakfast
You will have no difficulty finding a cafe to have breakfast near the house (there are a dozen or so cafés all within easy walking distance of the house (1 min to 7 minutes).
The bottom line is perhaps just pick up some pastries for Scotmid or Sugar Daddy’s. Or choose the Detour. If the weather is nice, brave Victor Hugo’s for the outside seating and view of the Meadows.
Or, alternatively, walk around to Snax for a good range of “full Scottish” breakfasts. Also possible order in a full Scottish breakfast from Snax.
b) Takeaways Nearby
No problem about bringing food into the house and there is a way of washing dishes in the rooms if you wish. Takeaway outlets open and close with alarming rapidity just along from the house. Three, however, have stood the test of time. Salvatore’s fish and chips and pizzas, the GY Chinese takeaways, Kasbah Indian takeaway (and other offerings) are all to be found by walking towards the Supermarket.
c) Bars
Only local bars are here. For the centre, the Café Royal and its neighbour The Guildford Arms (which does food) are recommended. This is more for the Victorian décor than for the prices.
Children are only allowed in pubs in Edinburgh if the pub offers food. See recommended child friendly pubs below
Otherwise, the bars below are in walking distance and two in particular will give you more of a flavour of Edinburgh away from the tourist circuit.
d) Restaurants
There are four quality restaurants in easy walking distance from the house. I know The Rabbit Hole and Pomelo and have a particular bias for the Rabbit Hole. For evening meals, at least, it is just about impossible to just walk in and, so, you will need to book.
You can take children into a restaurant, of course, in Scotland.
For a meal in the late evening, The Weatherspoons Pub chain serve children until 9, The Abbey serves until 9.30, The Salisbury Arms until 11.00 . However, if you are going with children, you have to leave before 8 for the Abbey (the usual time for child friendly pubs) before 9 for the Weatherspoons Chain and before 10 for The Salisbury Arms.
You will be able to find more details by going to the drop down menu.
